An up-to-date Ubuntu hardy installation has

APT::Default-Release "hardy";

and after adding lines for the intrepid repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list still wants to do a lot of removing and installing of intrepid packages. We don't understand the reasoning, but with -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=yes appended to the apt command, we get some more information.
