Try whether the package builds with
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
If not, troubleshoot until it does.
Run lintian on the .changes file.
Fix until you satisfy lintian (overriding is not necessary to accomplish that).
If you don't understand lintian's output, try the -i option.
